How do you get to Zayed National Museum from Dubai?

By car, the drive from Dubai takes approximately one hour. The museum is in the Saadiyat Cultural District on Saadiyat Island, and the route in is clearly signposted. We drove from Dubai and had no trouble at all finding it.

Parking is free and straightforward. There are shaded bays, which is the kind of detail that matters in the UAE, and I noticed EV charging on site too.

There is no direct public transport from Dubai to the Saadiyat Cultural District. A taxi or car hire is the practical option for most visitors. If you are already in Abu Dhabi, local taxis and ride-hailing apps reach the island without difficulty.

If you are making a day trip of it, the Louvre Abu Dhabi and the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi are both within easy walking distance. So is teamLab, the interactive digital art space. You could fill a full day and still have things left to see.

What does Zayed National Museum look like from the outside?

Designed by Norman Foster of Foster + Partners, the building cost AED 2.5 billion (approximately US$680 million) to construct. Five aerodynamic towers define the exterior, each inspired by the feathers of a falcon's wing. The reference to falconry is deliberate: Sheikh Zayed was well known for his connection to the sport.

Before we even got to the entrance, we stopped for photos. From the outside, the building genuinely looks like you are about to walk into a spaceship. I mean that as a compliment. It is striking without being cold.

The lobby is spacious and calm. The staff were warm and the whole entrance experience had a composed, intentional quality to it. This is a museum that was built to feel significant, and it does.

What are the galleries at Zayed National Museum?

The museum holds more than 3,000 artefacts, with 1,500 currently on display across six permanent galleries (Zayed National Museum, 2025). The galleries are arranged to move you through a narrative that begins with Sheikh Zayed's life and ends with the ancient human history of this region. Follow the recommended sequence and you will not get lost.

Our Beginning: the gallery that gave me goosebumps

We started with Our Beginning, and the first moment really stayed with me. You walk into a dark room and see a large illuminated portrait of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, with his words projected and audible in the space around you.

Goosebumps.

I have lived in the UAE for almost two decades, so I thought I had a reasonable understanding of the history. This museum took it to a different level. The story is told through animations, projections, sound, and physical installations that make it feel personal rather than instructive. One of the displays is a recreation of Sheikh Zayed's car from the 1968 documentary "Farewell Arabia", with the film projected alongside it.

The Experimental Sail Boat

After leaving Our Beginning, you come across a large black sail boat suspended in the space. This is an experimental reconstruction of one of the largest trading vessels believed to have sailed from the Bronze Age ports of Magan, the civilisation that occupied present-day UAE and Oman between approximately 2500 and 2000 BCE (Arab News, 2024).

The museum explains how the reconstruction was built: every detail came from archaeological evidence and physical experimentation. Including the sail, which was sewn from goat hair. The boat has actually been sailed. There is footage of it on the water with the Abu Dhabi skyline behind it.

Through Our Nature and the upper floors

Through Our Nature covers the UAE's landscapes and how they shaped life over time. The gallery has interactive screens throughout, and I can imagine children finding this section particularly good. The standout visual is a screen that spans the height of two full floors.

Upstairs, the galleries document human activity in this region across a timeline that stretches back 300,000 years. When you think about Abu Dhabi as a young city, the scale of that history makes for a genuinely disorienting shift in perspective.

Is Erth Restaurant at Zayed National Museum worth it?

Yes, and book in advance. After about two hours in the galleries we were hungry, and I was glad I had reserved a table. We sat outside on the terrace and it was a good lunch. The table filled up quickly around us.

Erth became the first Emirati restaurant to receive a Michelin star in December 2023, and has held the distinction for three consecutive years (Michelin Guide, 2025). The branch at Zayed National Museum is separate from the original location at Qasr Al Hosn, which received the award. Both are under head chef Debi Prasad Rath and serve Emirati-inspired food with a contemporary approach.

The menu feels innovative while being grounded in Emirati flavours. We asked the waiter for recommendations and followed them entirely. Everything was well judged. The outdoor terrace has a view of the Cultural District and works well in the cooler months, though there is indoor seating too.

What is Al Masar Garden?

Al Masar Garden is the outdoor gallery surrounding the museum, and it is accessible without a ticket. It tells the story of Sheikh Zayed through the landscapes that shaped his life, using native plants arranged across three zones: desert, oasis, and urban.

It is not the main highlight of the visit, but it should not be skipped. After lunch we did a slow walk through the full length of it. The pace felt right after an intensive morning inside.

Walk all the way to the far end and you will find one of the better photo spots in the Cultural District: a clear view of the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi next door. The architecture of the two buildings together is worth the walk.

My tips for visiting Zayed National Museum

These are the things I would tell a friend before they went.

• Follow the signs and go through the galleries in the recommended sequence. The narrative is designed to build, and moving out of order loses that.
• Book Erth Restaurant before you arrive, not when you get hungry. The terrace fills up.
• Do not miss Al Masar Garden. It is easy to walk past it on the way out, but the far end of the garden has a view worth seeing.
• Give this at least half a day. If you rush, you will miss the details in the Our Beginning gallery, which is where most of the real quality sits.
• If you have a full day, the Louvre Abu Dhabi, Natural History Museum, and teamLab are all within easy reach on the same island. You could combine two without feeling rushed.
• Wear comfortable shoes. The galleries are large and the walk through Al Masar Garden adds to the total distance.

Zayed National Museum ticket price and booking

Tickets cost AED 70 per person for adults. Children under 18, Senior Emiratis and UAE Residents, and People of Determination enter free.

Book online to guarantee entry and skip the queue at the door. The museum was busy on the Saturday we visited, particularly in the first few hours of the day.
